We are proud to announce that we have launched 2024’s edition of our annual sustainable business report, Bryt by Nature!

As a supplier of zero carbon, 100% renewable electricity*, we feel that businesses have a responsibility to ensure that they have a positive impact on the world they’re operating in. That’s why we launched our Bryt by Nature programme in 2020, to help us on our journey to become a better business.

Our Bryt by Nature report highlights our progress year-on-year, in each of our four key business values of being trusted, passionate, sustainable and pioneering by nature. These values are aligned with our chosen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and are integral to everything we do. This includes our company objectives, how we want our employees to act, how we construct all of our products and how we influence our communities.

From embedding our sustainability values in our team through Carbon Literacy, to expanding our product offerings to facilitate our customers’ needs, you can find out more about the key developments in our sustainability journey in our 2024 Bryt by Nature report.

Our progress

Our SBTi targets

After setting our science-based emissions reduction targets with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2023, we are on track to meet our goals. Our targets include a 90% reduction of Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, from a 2020 base year. We’re even more confident in meeting this target following the move to our new office building. Not only is our space more energy efficient, but it is also heated by renewable electricity and will therefore considerably reduce our overall gas consumption.

Carbon Literacy

Alongside this, we are thrilled to announce that we are now the first renewable electricity supplier* to become a Carbon Literate Organisation – accredited Silver.

In 2024, we wanted to empower our team with the knowledge to create change in their wider sphere of influence. As part of this wider employee engagement programme on sustainability, we decided to develop a Carbon Literacy training course for our team. This training was customised to align with our purpose and sustainability strategy, and focused on the causes and impacts of climate change, the key role of renewable energy in decarbonising the grid, and the actions we can all take to tackle climate change. As a result, 60% of our team are now certified as Carbon Literate, and are equipped to implement actions to reduce carbon emissions, at work, at home, and in the community.

Supporting our team

We’ve continued to prioritise our sustainable growth as a business throughout the year, extending our team to almost 150 employees. As our team grew, we worked to support their needs by agreeing a new office at Cornerblock, providing a modern and flexible working environment that aligns with our commitment to sustainability and employee wellbeing. We’ve also continued to support our EDI Champions in raising awareness and celebrating various important observance days and events, in order to promote a healthy, positive and inclusive workplace. We are proud to say that 86% of our employees answered that they’re proud to work for our company in our latest survey.

Pioneering solutions

We know that innovation and collaboration is crucial in the journey to net zero. To help foster this, last year we established a new Product and Proposition team, who work to facilitate a greater scope of products for our customers’ evolving needs in the energy transition. As part of the Statkraft Group, we also collaborated with Statkraft to expand our range of pioneering products, offering businesses more renewable procurement options, such as Corporate Purchase Power Agreements (CPPAs) and green hydrogen solutions.

As well as helping our customers take action, we also want to be able to shape conversations about the future of the energy industry. So, this past year we’ve also joined Energy UK and The Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE), to work together with likeminded peers to find solutions in our industry.

Improving our customer service

In 2024, we also prioritised providing the best possible service for our customers. We joined the Institute of Customer Service, an independent professional membership body, in order to gather valuable information and advice about areas that could see improvement. In the future, we plan to make progress in the Institute of Customer Service’s accreditation program, to make sure we are delivering the service that our customers expect and deserve from us.

OUR KEY LEARNINGS FROM 2024

Over the past year, there were several key things we learnt and will take into 2025, which we’ve shared in the hope that other businesses might find them helpful.

We’ve been reminded that, with value chains inextricably linked, we cannot reach a sustainable future alone. In order to reach net zero, we all have to collaborate – within our organisation, with suppliers and with third parties. In 2024, this involved reaching out to our suppliers to better understand our carbon footprint, as well as sharing our knowledge and best practice with our customers, partners and the wider energy industry.

The energy transition is a continuously evolving space, with new information and solutions always emerging. As we all look to understand how we can ensure the UK’s energy system can accommodate more renewable energy, it’s evident how important it is that suppliers constantly pay attention to key developments and trends, both now and in the future. It’s essential that we all share this information in an accessible way, simplifying complicated aspects of the energy transition for mass adoption.

We also know that delivering our purpose is not possible without our incredible team, and we need every employee engaged to be able to drive change. A big part of our ongoing employee engagement was our Carbon Literacy training, and within the overall positive response we received, we were reminded that everyone learns in different ways. Whether that be the format of the training or the length of sessions, we will take these different preferences into consideration, as we find new ways to engage with our team.

Lastly, feedback is an essential tool in learning how best to engage with our team on these topics. Conversations and surveys with our employees were also incredibly useful in identifying how to create a healthy working environment and culture that inspires our team to deliver our purpose. Likewise, communicating with our customers has helped us better understand their reporting and supply requirements – something we will continue to develop this year.

We’re proud of all the work we’ve done this year to become a better, more sustainable business, and we know there’s more to do. We will continue to be transparent and share our own journey, in the hope that by doing so we can help others to have a smoother path.
